Blackheath & Thornburgh College invites applications for our 2025 Scholarship Program.

To be considered for a scholarship at the College in 2025, students must make an online scholarship application which involves registering to attend the College for one of our on-site testing dates in 2024, in addition to submitting required documents under the scholarship category criteria, & submitting an enrolment application. 

Scholarships are on offer for students entering Year 6 and Year 7 in 2025.

Applications open 1 March 2024. Deadlines for submission of applicants are listed in the 2025 Scholarship Applicant Program Guidelines.

Who can apply?

  • Current students of Blackheath & Thornburgh College.
  • Students who are not yet enrolled at the College.
  • Applicants must be Australian citizens or permanent residents of Australia.
  • Applicants must be entering Years 6 or 7 in 2025.

Scholarship Application Checklist

Please use this as a checklist of requirements for your application:

Step 1

Complete Scholarship Registration + Application Process. You will need to:

  • Select a scholarship test date and complete online scholarship application, including payment of the $88 scholarship application fee.
  • Upload a Student Personal Statement: minimum 300-word statement addressing the scholarship/s criteria applied for. Students must specify which scholarships they wish to be considered for, in addition to introducing themselves and outlining their personal qualities. Student Personal Statements should also make mention of any special awards, contributions to school/family/social communities, participation and/or selection in relevant programs that highlight student expertise or personal values. Additionally, students must include what and how they will contribute to the College The minimum limit for the Student Personal Statement is 300-words. All work produced and provided must belong to the student.
  • Upload supporting documentation where applicable: certificates of achievement, awards, references from coaches etc.

Step 2

Complete an Enrolment Application prior to Scholarship Test. You will need the following documentation:

  • Birth Certificate
  • Immunization History Statement
  • 3 most recent school report cards (Semester 1 + 2 of 2023, Semester 2 of 2022).
  • NAPLAN report
  • You will not need to pay the $50 enrolment application fee

Note that submitting an Enrolment Application with the College is not a guarantee of an offer of enrolment at the College. The College will liaise with all families to let them know of outcomes of both scholarship offers as well as offers of enrolment at the College for 2025.

There is no obligation placed on families by submitting an Enrolment Application.

Step 3

Sit the scholarship test on your selected testing date at the College.

Testing Dates for 2025 Scholarships

Registrations for testing and all required supporting documents must be completed 14 days prior to the advertised scholarship testing date. Testing will be held onsite at Blackheath & Thornburgh College on the following dates.

Note: If you are unable to attend testing onsite, there may be an opportunity for families to arrange testing at alternative locations. This will be approved at the discretion of the College, and families will need to cover any associated costs and facilitate appropriate testing conditions. Please contact the College Registrar to discuss further.

Scholarship Categories

An Academic Scholarship may cover up to 50% of tuition fees applicable to enrolment. Students will demonstrate a commitment to achieving academic excellence evidenced through school references and awards, participation and/or selection in programs or academic extension events and activities, as well as any other demonstrable evidence relating to high levels of achievement and contribution.

Blackheath & Thornburgh College has a rich sporting history and continues to offer outstanding sporting opportunities for students. Our particular strengths are, but not limited to, Rugby League, Netball, Cricket, Tennis, Softball and Interschool competitions which include Swimming, Athletics and Cross Country. Sporting scholarships may cover up to 50% of tuition and/or boarding fees applicable to enrolment. Students will demonstrate, through references and results, strong sportsmanship and athletic ability at a local or regional representative level or above.

Boarding bursaries may cover up to 50% of boarding costs. Boarding bursaries offer the opportunity for students who are passionate about education to overcome the barriers of distance and access.

A Creative and Performing Arts Scholarship may cover up to 50% of tuition and/or boarding fees applicable to enrolment. Recipients of Creative and Performing Arts Scholarships are typically students who will add to the life of the school in areas of arts and culture. Characteristically, this student will be academically capable and have demonstrated strengths in a number of areas, which may include but are not limited to drama, music, visual arts, dance and language.

Local Champions Scholarships may cover up to 50% of tuition fees applicable to enrolment. The Local Champions Scholarships are available for outstanding young people in the Charters Towers region who have displayed leadership skills in one or more of the following areas:

  • Leadership roles (eg. school or house captain, student council representative)
  • Community group leaders (eg. Scouts, Girl Guides, sporting clubs)
  • Recognised volunteering efforts or coordination of charitable initiatives

Scholarship Conditions

Please take into account the following conditions before applying:

  • BTC Scholarships are not transferable to another school or student.
  • BTC Scholarships do not include any incidental expenses such as uniforms, textbooks, stationary, transport costs etc.
  • Items of personal expenditure (for example, toiletries, casual clothes etc.) are not included in the Scholarship.
  • All Scholarship recipients NOT currently enrolled in the College will be required to undertake the College's enrolment process, including the completion of enrolment forms, payment of monies and submission of appropriate documentation.
  • As per the Blackheath & Thornburgh College Scholarship Policy, no 'Sibling Discount' will apply to the applicant if granted a Scholarship.
  • The Scholarship holder will be subject to all the rules and regulations of the College in the same way as are all other students. This extends to the College's behaviour management policy and to the College's right  to  dismiss  the  student  if,  in the College's opinion, such action becomes necessary. 

The continuation of the Scholarship will be contingent upon the student's:

  • Continued academic performance at a level deemed satisfactory by the Principal.
  • Continued participation and involvement in the extra- curricular life of the College to the Principal's satisfaction.
  • Dress, bearing, manners and behaviour continuing to be of a high standard, and to the satisfaction of the Principal.
  • Fees and other monies owing to the College or its agencies being paid promptly.

The College may terminate any Scholarship at any time, where in its opinion, the terms of the award are not being met.

Blackheath & Thornburgh College reserves the right not to award a Scholarship if, in its opinion, no applicant is worthy of the award.

Financial Hardship Assistance

Applications for financial hardship assistance are considered on a case-by-case basis and are subject to a formal application submitted to the Principal and are separate to the scholarship and bursary process. Offers for a supported enrolment (that is, one that has a % of tuition or boarding fees covered) are made at the discretion of the Principal. Any such offer is subject to vacancies being available following the consideration of all offers of enrolment for full fee-paying enrolments.
