The decision of where to send your child for a boarding education is one of the most difficult a parent will make. We understand the importance of this choice and we commit to provide your child with the highest possible level of care in our family-centred community.
There is no doubt that as your child moves through their adolescent years as a boarding student there will be challenging times. At BTC we provide clear expectations that are firmly and impartially monitored by caring staff to provide the emotional security and warm support that is so important through this period of a young person’s life.
We provide a range of experienced staff who are always available to support and assist our boarders. Your child’s time as a boarding student at BTC will bring many unique and rewarding experiences along with many lasting friendships and memories.
Facilities
BTC has purpose-built boarding facilities, situated onsite.
Boarding is gender appropriate, with separate Boys and Girls Boarding Houses.
These dormitory-style blocks are separate for girls and boys, providing each student with their own sleeping/reading area, and communal kitchens, common rooms with TV, wi-fi and other amenities, showers and toilets. Air conditioning is provided for the warmer months.
Students are generally located with peers the same age, to help foster a sense of belonging and all are in immediate proximity to all that BTC has to offer. We take security very seriously, with our dorm staff located onsite. Each dorm has an alarm system and dorms are secured each night.
Students can take advantage of the school and dorm grounds. The dorms are close to classrooms, sporting facilities and the dining hall.
Activities
Boarding is as much about social interaction as it is a style of education and we recognise the importance of activities to promote friendships and have fun.
We run a wide range of activities through the school year, offering students activities such as sport, camping, barbecues and pool parties and other opportunities to socialise, get to know other boarding students and build their sense of camaraderie within a close-knit, friendly and supportive environment.
To help new and younger students settle in, we organise start- and end-of-term events, focused on bringing students together, building their confidence a shared set of social values.
Our Boarding Staff
BTC has two Heads of Boarding – one for each of the Boys and Girls Dorms. They are there to support, guide and correct where necessary through firm but fair leadership. They form a strong bond with boarders. In each house there is a team of staff who work with each Head of Dorms.
Boarding ethos
Above all, boarding at BTC is about being part of a close and highly supportive community and we recognise our role in helping boarding students settle in, find their place as an inclusive part of the College and guiding each student along the paths of education, social and personal development.
Looking after each other
Boarding at BTC fosters a strong sense of collegiality, as our structure encourages students to bond, form friendships and build a framework of mutual respect and trust.
Health and well-being
Overall, we encourage students to develop their own sense of personal worth and values: looking after themselves, maintaining their health, wellbeing and personal hygiene. Of course, there may be times when a student is injured or falls unwell. We provide an outstanding level of heath care through our health centre team who work closely in conjunction with local chemists, doctors, dentists and allied health professionals, who all recognise the various needs that boarding can impose on students. Should the need for more extensive medical intervention arise, BTC is very close to Charters Towers Health Service.
Located in Charters Towers, North Queensland, we offer co-educational learning from Kindy to Year 12 with Boarding facilities.
